Diplomats, educators, peace advocates and artists from different parts of the world will meet online on Sunday, September 20, 2026, for Global Peace Education Day, with this year’s conference centered on the theme “Peace Education for Everyone, Everywhere.”Law & Government Organized by the Global Peace Education Network (GPEN), the free conference will take place via Zoom from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. EDT. GPEN describes it as its fifth annual online conference. Speakers will discuss the use of peace education in schools, communities, organizations and public life. “Peace education is no longer optional,” said David Weinberg, CEO of the Global Peace Education Network.

The University for Peace (UPEACE) has published Bribri Teachings for the World, a bilingual book by indigenous leader Alí García Segura and Chair of the UPEACE Department of Environment and Development Dr. Olivia Sylvester, that draws on more than 15 years of collaboration exploring the knowledge, community practices, and forms of organization of the Bribri people. Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has led development of an international legal order. Dr. Pillay was educated in the law and defended activists who stood up against apartheid. Dr. Pillay was appointed to the High Court of South Africa in 1995. Four years later she became a judge and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR),helping establish that sexual violence and rape are crimes against humanity and genocide. From 2008 to 2014 she served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). She chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory from 2021 to 2025.

The UN General Assembly has approved the merger of two United Nations learning and training bodies, creating a new institution designed to strengthen support for both Member States and the UN system itself. In a resolution adopted on September 3, the 193-member Assembly endorsed the integration of the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) into the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and approved the establishment of the United Nations Institute for Capability and Learning Innovation (UNICLI) from 1 January 2027. The decision is part of the wider UN80 Initiative, that aims to make the United Nations more coherent, effective and responsive to today's challenges.
